Abbey's New Bed...

Check out Abbey's newest pieces of bedroom furniture...

I can't entirely claim the idea as my own given that we saw a better homes and gardens show on the tele (when we had a tele back in Gladstone) and saw the idea for a backlit headboard. The starscape and overall design however I will claim as my own and it seemed to work well. Biggest issue in the finish was actually getting the MDF from the place that sold it to the place that would cut it to most of the right dimensions... The rest was pretty straight forward... A lot of patience with drills, a jigsaw, sandpaper and a triangular file for the headboard, a few screws, glue, paint and bob's your uncle, or Abbey's your sleeping daughter in this instance.

That morning face (I realise) is not the most rested looking... but I assure you - she sleeps, well, like a baby in it! Speaking of sleeping like a baby... the saying seems to connote sleeping really soundly and well, yet most parents you chat to will suggest their babies did nothing of the sort... Perhaps the saying should be "sleeping like a single adult after a few pints"?? (Single 'cos that way they don't have another in the bed to wake them up rolling and thrashing about in the night). Just a thought. Doesn't really have the same ring to it as sleeping like a baby though. Perhaps the meaning could just be changed from 'one who sleeps soundly and well', to 'one who sleeps fitfully, with interjections of screaming, farting, urinating, defecating, and drinking.'???

I Digress. In addition to Abbey's bed, We also made her a wee shelf unit which was also pretty simple to make (though notably not anywhere near as simple as going to a shop and buying a readymade one, perhaps a lot cooler though, for its home-made-ness!) This in theory is for Abbey's clothes and other assorted crap as well as leaving room for number two's accumulated stuff (which i'm sure he or she will collect just as quickly as Ab's has).

No idea what the next little project will be, but I have been enjoying being a little bit creative and using the woodworking skills a bit, along with the continued playing in the garden. These things always take many many more hours than you think they will though eh?
The bed and shelves were meant to be all finished in time for Gwen and Vince's arrival. Not so much to show them (though that is an obviously positive by-product of such timing) But more for the timing itself of their visit coming just when the humidity around these parts is going through the roof... hence the need to get the things painted and put together to stop the MDF from warping horribly as it has a tendency to do if not sealed. We managed to get the bed done the night before they arrived (Just!) but the shelf has taken us a week longer, and is justifiably a family effort having been designed and measured by me, sealed by Mez, most of the colours painted by Gwen, and then a few finishing touches done by Mez and I before the two of us put it together last night...
Job well done I say!
